KenGen strikes 375MW from new geothermal wells
Electricity generating company KenGen is set to boost its geothermal output following the discovery of steam wells that can generate up to 375 megawatts at its Olkaria fields.
The wells will be used to develop three power plants with total capacity of 350MW.
KenGen said it would continue to drill wells to supply steam for an additional 70MW unit at the recently commissioned Olkaria I unit four and five plants.
“The available steam is 374.7MW. This is for Olkaria 1 Unit 6, a single unit of 70MW to be constructed at Olkaria 1. Available steam for this plant is 84MW,” said KenGen’s director for geothermal development, Abel Rotich.
Ethiopia Signs a Deal for Construction of a High-Voltage Transmission Line to Kenya
Ethiopia signed a US$20 million-agreement with China Electric Power Equipment and Technology for the construction of a high-voltage transmission line connecting with Kenya as part of plans to boost regional power exports.
The 433-km project will stretch from Wolaita in southern Ethiopia to the border, making half of a planned 1,045 km link with Kenya. It was signed on Friday (June 19) Ethiopian Electric Power's Chief Executive Azeb Asnake and the CEPET's vice-president Chen Wei.

Sh500 Billion for Urban Renewal Project
Nairobi — Nairobi County Government is seeking to raise about Sh530 billion through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to undertake its urban regeneration and renewal projects within the city.
Speaking during an investors briefing on Wednesday morning, Governor Evans Kidero indicated that the project will consist of three phases which will involve the redevelopment of old housing estates in sections of the city into apartment buildings, developing high storey car park buildings and rehabilitation of medical facilities.
Enel Green Power announces start of construction on an 82.5 MW PV plant in South Africa
Enel Green Power (EGP, Rome, Italy) has begun construction of the Pulida solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, which is located in the Free State Province in South Africa.
The PV project will have a total installed capacity of 82.5 MW and once fully operational will be able to generate more than 150 GWh of solar power annually, equivalent to the annual consumption needs of around 48,000 South African households.
Solar power generated by Pulida will be sold to the South African utility Eskom through the 20-year power supply agreement that EGP was awarded in October 2013 as part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) promoted by the South African Government.
