Another 40MW solar power plant in Kenya to be constructed

Another 40MW solar power plant in Kenya is set to be constructed in Nandi County, Kenya this is afterKenya Solar Energy Ltd showed interest in constructing a 40MW plant in Lamu County soon.

Kopere Solar Park Limited which is the company behind the project is currently seeking regulatory approval for them to commence on the construction. The solar plant is projected to cost US$ 10m and will be financed by Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and Martifer Solar which is a Portugal based firm will be involved as the technical partners to develop, build and operate the solar plant during its lifetime.

The mega plant will sit on a 250 acres of land and will include a 1.8km transmission line of 132KV connecting to Lessos-Kisumu hills power main line and a step up sub-station. The model that is proposed is very recent and will contribute to bringing new financing and operation models to this region and Africa as a whole.

Many other companies have moved to take advantage of Kenya’s favourable sunny climate to set up solar farms that are expected to exist in the next few years, UK firm Solarcentury, Green Energy Africa and Greenmillenia Energy Ltd are among the interested few companies who have set base in Kenya.

In addition, Strathmore University, which mounted solar panels that had a capacity of 0.6MW, last year, signed a 20year power purchase agreement with Kenya Power.

CIF is a global mechanism that is providing funds for green energy projects with the African Development Bank (AfDB).
